Bigger than in the Rhineland

The carnival on Tenerife is the second biggest in the world, only Rio de Janeiro can compete with it. The biggest carnival in Germany located in the Rhineland is nothing compared to it. No wonder that despite difficult economic circumstances every Kanario is celebrating. Even at the time when the carnival was prohibited, the people insisted on their carnival and celebrated it well-camouflaged as a winter-fair.

Carnival in Santa Cruz

During the carnival season the political affairs are paused in Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife. The Plaza de Espana will be decorated carefully and stalls for the carnival are built. After that the carnival king gets elected. When the royal household is completed the carnival parades can start.

The following week is then dominated of music and costume competitions. The town is filled with strolling samba and masks groups, also with historic wagons. The highlight is the carnival tuesday in Santa Cruz: The biggest parades will start there in the afternoon.

The funeral of the Sardine - Tenerifes' Ash Wednesday

The last part of the carnival is the funeral of the sardine. This day will be celebrated in every part of the island, especially in Puerto de la Cruz, Los Realejos and La Orotava. The sardine is a puppet made of rags. It will be carried on a throne through all town in Santa Cruz. Widows, Wailers and even pregnant males say goodbye to the carnival afterwards.

Carnival in Puerto de la Cruz

After the carnival has ended in the capital, it will start in Puerto de la Cruz. The farewell to the carnival is the starting shot to the Fiesta in the north of the island.

That is the reason why the carnival in Puerto has become to an international tourist attraction. The biggest parades start in Puerto on the Saturday after the Ash Wednesday and are attended by music and mask groups with historic wagons.
